NAGOYA, Japan — Two-time Olympic champion Carlos Yulo proudly celebrated another milestone for Philippine gymnastics after his younger brother, Karl Eldrew Yulo, captured a bronze medal in the men’s horizontal bar at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Eldrew delivered an impressive performance in Friday’s horizontal bar final, scoring 13.666 points to secure a podium finish in his Asian Games debut.
The 18-year-old Filipino gymnast finished behind China’s Hao Tian, who claimed gold with 14.700 points, and Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka, who earned silver with 14.033.
Eldrew tied Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi in total score, but the Filipino secured the bronze through the tiebreak after receiving a higher execution score of 8.566, compared with Karimi’s 7.766. A
The achievement prompted an emotional reaction from Carlos, who watched and celebrated his younger brother’s breakthrough performance. ABS-CBN reported that the Olympic champion was visibly thrilled as Eldrew secured his first Asian Games medal.
The younger Yulo was also overcome with emotion after seeing the final results, describing a mix of happiness, pride and disbelief after reaching the podium.
Eldrew’s bronze capped a memorable day for the Yulo brothers and Philippine gymnastics.
Earlier Friday, Carlos captured his second gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games after ruling the men’s vault final with an average score of 14.599. The victory came a day after he won the men’s floor exercise, giving the Philippines its first gold medal of the Games.
The brothers’ performances further highlighted the Philippines’ growing presence in Asian gymnastics, with Carlos adding two Asian Games titles to his decorated international career while Eldrew marked his first appearance at the continental meet with a podium finish.
