SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation has partnered with renewable energy developer Buskowitz Energy to construct the largest heavy industry single-roof solar installation in the Philippines. Set to rise at SteelAsia’s flagship Compostela Works facility in Cebu, the 8-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar rooftop development marks a major milestone in integrating sustainable energy into large-scale industrial manufacturing.
The massive installation will span approximately 65,560 square meters of roof area, featuring 12,888 solar panels paired with 54 high-capacity inverters. Once fully operational, the system is projected to produce roughly 12,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually. This renewable output will cover approximately 25 percent of the Compostela plant’s total energy demands, significantly reducing its reliance on traditional grid electricity and cushioning operational costs against energy market fluctuations.
Beyond enhancing operational efficiency, the project carries substantial environmental benefits by avoiding an estimated 8,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Over a five-year period, this reduction in greenhouse gases is equivalent to recycling 73,500 tons of waste, offsetting over 800 million kilometers driven by standard passenger vehicles, or eliminating the combustion of 90 million liters of gasoline.
The Compostela project represents the second solar installation across SteelAsia’s nationwide manufacturing footprint, following an initial solar project at its Bulacan plant. Company leadership noted that while SteelAsia has long utilized hydroelectric and geothermal power across various mills, expanding solar installations provides a practical, scalable model for continuous decarbonization. Under the partnership agreement, Buskowitz Energy will handle engineering, procurement, construction, and long-term operations, establishing a blueprint for heavy industry green initiatives in the region.
