MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo Blue Eagles player Sam Reyes revealed that teammate Divine Adili still had a pulse when he was pulled from the water during the tragic drowning incident that claimed the lives of two Ateneo basketball players in Aurora earlier this month.
In an emotional account of the June 8 tragedy, Reyes recalled the frantic efforts made to save Adili after he and fellow player Rene Clert Baterbonia were caught in rough waters during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. According to Reyes, Adili was still showing signs of life when teammates managed to bring him back to shore.

Reyes said he and other members of the team immediately attempted to assist Adili while waiting for emergency responders, holding on to hope that he would survive the ordeal. Despite their efforts, Adili later succumbed to the incident.
The drowning claimed the lives of Adili, 21, and Baterbonia, 19, sending shockwaves throughout the Ateneo community and the Philippine basketball scene. The two players were participating in a team-building activity organized for the men’s basketball program when the tragedy occurred.

In the aftermath of the incident, Ateneo de Manila University expressed profound grief over the loss of the two student-athletes and extended its condolences to their families, teammates, coaches, and friends. The university also pledged support for those affected by the tragedy.
The incident has sparked discussions regarding safety measures during athletic team-building activities, with many calling for a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
As the Ateneo community continues to mourn, tributes have poured in for Adili and Baterbonia, who were remembered not only for their contributions on the court but also for the impact they made on their teammates and loved ones.
