Japan has its kimono rentals. South Korea has its hanbok experiences. Now, the Philippines finally has its own cultural attire rental experience — and it is set against the historic backdrop of the country’s famed Walled City.
“Traje de Intramuros,” a newly launched heritage tourism initiative located inside Fort Santiago in Intramuros, Manila, offers Filipinos and tourists the chance to step back in time by wearing traditional Filipino attire while exploring one of the country’s most iconic historical sites.
The immersive cultural experience allows guests to don beautifully crafted Filipino garments, including the elegant Maria Clara-inspired dress and the timeless Barong Tagalog, while strolling through centuries-old landmarks that played a significant role in Philippine history. More than just a costume rental service, Traje de Intramuros aims to transform heritage appreciation into a living, interactive experience.

Beyond the attire itself, the initiative also offers visitors an immersive cultural journey through heritage tours and live cultural performances that celebrate Filipino identity, artistry, and tradition. Organizers said the goal is to allow guests to experience Philippine culture in a more personal and meaningful way — something that goes beyond textbooks, museums, and photographs.

The project was conceptualized by Archie Dema-ala of the La Manila Dance Ambassadors and Rondalla, who envisioned creating a uniquely Filipino cultural attraction comparable to the popular traditional attire experiences found in neighboring Asian countries. According to Dema-ala, the initiative seeks to highlight that Filipino heritage is equally vibrant, elegant, and worthy of global recognition.
Open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at La Events Cafe inside Fort Santiago, the attraction caters to tourists, history enthusiasts, families, students, and content creators looking for a unique cultural experience in the heart of Manila. Special cultural performances are exclusively held every Sunday, adding another layer to the immersive heritage showcase.

Rates range from approximately ₱800 to ₱2,000 depending on the selected package and optional add-ons such as hairstyling, makeup services, accessories, and professional photoshoots. Guests are also provided with lockers for convenience, allowing them to comfortably explore Intramuros while fully dressed in traditional attire.
The initiative has generated positive reactions online, with many Filipinos praising the concept as a long-overdue celebration of Filipino culture and fashion heritage. Social media users noted how the experience could strengthen appreciation for local traditions while boosting cultural tourism in Manila.

Organizers emphasized that the experience was carefully developed in coordination with the Intramuros Administration to ensure responsible tourism practices and proper preservation of the heritage site.
More than a simple photo opportunity, Traje de Intramuros is being promoted as a celebration of Filipino identity — where culture is worn proudly, history is experienced deeply, and heritage comes alive through fashion, storytelling, and tradition.
For many visitors, it is not just about dressing up. It is about reconnecting with the Filipino story.
The Philippines has always had a rich history worth sharing. Now, visitors can finally wear it with pride.
