The National Historical Commission of the Philippines, in partnership with the City Government of San Juan, commemorated the 129th death anniversary of Filipino revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio during a ceremony held on May 10, 2026 at the Andres Bonifacio Monument inside the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine.
The commemorative event gathered local officials, representatives from the NHCP, and members of the public to honor Bonifacio’s life, patriotism, and contributions to the country’s struggle for independence.

San Juan Lone District Representative Ysabel Maria J. Zamora served as the guest of honor during the ceremony. She was joined by NHCP Historic Sites and Education Division Chief Gina C. Batuhan, San Juan Vice Mayor Jose Angelo Rafael E. Agcaoili, and other city government officials.

The program featured wreath-laying rites and messages highlighting Bonifacio’s enduring legacy as one of the country’s foremost revolutionary leaders. Officials emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices of national heroes, especially amid continuing efforts to strengthen patriotism and historical awareness among Filipinos.

Bonifacio, widely known as the “Supremo,” played a vital role in the fight against Spanish colonial rule through the establishment and leadership of the Katipunan, the revolutionary society that ignited the Philippine Revolution in 1896. He also led the historic Battle of San Juan del Monte, considered one of the earliest major uprisings against Spanish forces.
Despite facing arrest, trial, and eventual execution in Maragondon, Cavite on May 10, 1897, Bonifacio’s courage and dedication to freedom left a lasting mark on Philippine history. More than a century after his death, his ideals of nationalism, justice, and unity continue to inspire generations of Filipinos.

The NHCP said the annual observance not only honors Bonifacio’s heroism but also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Filipino revolutionaries in shaping the nation’s identity and independence.
The NHCP is the government agency tasked with promoting Philippine history through museums, research, publications, and the preservation of historical sites and structures across the country.
