MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that classes in public schools for School Year 2026–2027 will officially begin on June 8, 2026.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara confirmed the schedule, stating that the school year will run until April 8, 2027, following the implementation of the department’s new three-term academic calendar.

According to DepEd Order No. 009, Series 2026, the upcoming school year will consist of 201 class days, covering three academic terms. The agency said adjustments may still be made depending on unforeseen circumstances through future issuances.
Angara said the shift to a three-term system is aimed at improving learning continuity, providing longer and more manageable instructional periods, and reducing non-teaching workload for educators. He added that the reform is intended to strengthen the quality of instruction and support better learning outcomes for students.
Under the policy, private schools, state universities, and local colleges offering basic education may adopt the three-term calendar, provided they comply with the required number of class days, ranging from 200 to 220 days per school year.

The new school calendar also forms part of broader education reforms being implemented by DepEd, including updates to senior high school programs and revised assessment and grading guidelines.
DepEd has begun nationwide orientations to guide regional offices, school divisions, and school heads on the implementation of the new system ahead of the June opening.
