CASTILLEJOS, Zambales — The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), in partnership with the Municipal Government of Castillejos, commemorates the 69th death anniversary of former President Ramon Magsaysay at the Museo ni Ramon Magsaysay.
Simple rites are held at 8:00 a.m., led by local officials, NHCP representatives, and members of the Magsaysay family. A wreath-laying ceremony and a commemorative mass form part of the program to honor the late president’s life and legacy.

Magsaysay, who is born in Iba, Zambales and raised in Castillejos, is remembered for his humble lifestyle and strong connection with the Filipino masses, earning him the title “Champion of the Common Man.” The house where he once lived now serves as a museum dedicated to preserving his memory and contributions to the nation.

Before ascending to the presidency, Magsaysay serves as a schoolteacher and later emerges as a key guerrilla leader during World War II. He is eventually appointed Secretary of National Defense under President Elpidio Quirino before winning the presidency in 1953.

His term, however, is cut short when the aircraft he is riding crashes into Mt. Manunggal in Balamban, Cebu in 1957, leading to his untimely death at the age of 49.
By virtue of Proclamation No. 15, series of 1966, March 17 is observed annually as Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Day, honoring the life and service of one of the country’s most beloved leaders.
