In a significant move, Tokyo Olympics medalist Kayla Sanchez has embraced her new role as a Filipino swimmer after switching allegiance from Canada to the Philippines a year ago. The 22-year-old swimming sensation is gearing up to make her debut representing the Philippines at the Hangzhou Asian Games in September.
Having opted to skip the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Sanchez expressed her commitment to focusing on securing medals for the Philippines at the upcoming Hangzhou Asian Games. With her impressive track record, including an Olympic silver and three World Championships gold medals while competing for Canada, expectations are high for her contributions to the Philippine swimming team.
Sanchez, under the guidance of her coach, made a strategic decision to forgo the World Championships in preparation for a busy competition schedule post-Asian Games, including another World Championships and the Olympics.
While Sanchez has completed the required one-year residency to compete as a Filipino athlete, she emphasized the importance of waiting for World Aquatics’ official approval of her transfer. Once confirmed, she eagerly anticipates giving her best in the Asian Games.
Expressing her gratitude, Sanchez thanked Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham Tolentino for facilitating her smooth transition to represent the Philippines. The POC president commended Sanchez’s decision, recognizing her as a seasoned swimmer with a bright future ahead.
As Sanchez prepares to make waves at the Hangzhou Asian Games, Filipino sports enthusiasts eagerly await her remarkable performances in the pool.
