For years, Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI) and its partners have worked alongside communities to meet the rapidly shifting demands of Philippine education. Today, these efforts directly answer the urgent call for systemic reform outlined by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II). From the critical first 1,000 days of life to tertiary lecture halls, MBFI is deploying evidence-based solutions designed to empower learners, support teachers, and rebuild underserved communities.
Early Literacy and the Foundation of Learning
Functional literacy—the ability to understand and apply what one reads—is the absolute gatekeeper to a student’s entire academic future. When children fail to develop this skill early, they face steep hurdles succeeding in any other subject.
To bridge this early gap, MBFI teamed up with the Binhi English Literacy Foundation to launch an intensive after-school remediation program for kindergarten and Grade 1 learners. The initiative focuses on critical foundational skills like letter recognition, phonics, spelling, and early writing.
The program shattered its initial performance targets. While organizers aimed for a 30% to 50% improvement rate, kindergarten learners surged by an average of 63.6% in reading skills, and Grade 1 learners improved by 53.3%.

Crushing Math Anxiety with SOLUTION
Numeracy is the next vital building block of education, yet math anxiety frequently paralyzes young learners. To counter this, MBFI launched SOLUTION, an acronym for Support for Optimal Learning and Understanding To Improve Overall Numeracy. The program shifts the instructional focus away from rote memorization, favoring learner-centered approaches that build genuine confidence.

During its pilot run at San Miguel Heights Elementary School in Valenzuela, the program recorded definitive results. An overwhelming 95.4% of participating students registered clear academic improvement, while average numeracy scores jumped by 26%. Crucially, 64.2% of the learners reported a significant drop in math anxiety, which translated directly into higher confidence and active classroom participation.

Equipping Classrooms and Rebuilding Schools
A student cannot learn without materials, and a teacher cannot instruct without tools. In many public schools—especially in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas—basic resources remain dangerously scarce.
MBFI and its partners have stepped in to fill this logistical void, providing over ₱8.4 million worth of learning kits, digital modules, photocopiers, radios, and computers. This includes a coordinated effort with the Department of Education (DepEd) to donate heavy-duty printers to 45 public schools across Laguna, Iloilo, and Davao del Norte, ensuring teaching materials make it directly into students’ hands.

Because physical learning environments heavily dictate student success, MBFI has pledged ₱11.5 million to DepEd this year specifically to construct classrooms in last-mile schools. Furthermore, recognizing that physical health directly impacts regular school attendance, MBFI joined forces with the RMN Foundation, Manila Water Foundation, and World Vision to invest ₱1.8 million in building handwashing facilities nationwide. These installations promote better hygiene, reduce childhood illness, and keep students in the classroom.
A Lifelong Pipeline from Infancy to Higher Education
While primary school is a major battleground for educational recovery, MBFI’s interventions span the entire human lifecycle.
This pipeline begins with early childhood development. Recognizing that crucial brain development peaks in infancy, MBFI funds targeted nutrition and feeding programs for pregnant mothers and toddlers up to age five, ensuring children are biologically ready to learn by the time they reach school age.

For those already in the workforce, MBFI focuses heavily on teacher empowerment. Teachers are the backbone of any educational recovery, and since 2008, the foundation has spearheaded the National Teachers’ Month movement. The initiative secures professional support, career engagement opportunities, and institutional recognition to keep educator morale high.
Finally, at the tertiary level, the Metrobank Scholarship Program continues to clear financial hurdles for college students. The program has sustained thousands of scholars over three decades, and this school year alone, 150 new scholars will receive full financial aid and mentorship across 15 partner universities.
