MANILA, Philippines — The Senate’s newly formed majority bloc has chosen Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero to serve as the presiding officer in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, according to senators aligned with the group.
The decision came following a shift in the Senate’s leadership and the emergence of a new majority coalition ahead of the highly anticipated impeachment proceedings against Duterte. Sen. Panfilo Lacson disclosed that members of the bloc had initially agreed to designate Escudero to oversee the trial once the Senate convenes as an impeachment court.

Escudero’s selection is notable as he previously served as Senate president and had presided over earlier impeachment-related proceedings involving the vice president. His role would place him at the center of one of the most consequential political and legal battles in recent Philippine history.

The impeachment case against Duterte stems from allegations that include misuse of public funds, accumulation of unexplained wealth, and threats against top government officials. Duterte has repeatedly denied the accusations, describing the impeachment effort as politically motivated.
The Senate is expected to formally proceed with the impeachment trial in the coming weeks. Escudero has indicated that the proceedings will continue regardless of whether Duterte personally attends the hearings.

The development follows a major shakeup in the Senate leadership, where Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian was elected Senate president after securing the support of the chamber’s majority, replacing a Duterte ally. Political observers view the leadership change as a significant factor that could influence the conduct of the impeachment proceedings.
As preparations continue, both the prosecution and defense are expected to finalize their strategies for a trial that could have far-reaching implications for Duterte’s political future, including her eligibility to seek higher office in the years ahead.
