MANILA, Philippines — Senator Jinggoy Estrada has cited a series of health conditions as he faces his third plunder case in 25 years, seeking consideration from the court while detained over allegations linked to the government’s flood control projects.
According to court filings and medical records submitted by his legal team, Estrada is suffering from several ailments affecting different parts of his body, including heart-related issues, osteoarthritis in both knees, shoulder problems, and other age-related health concerns. The senator has requested hospital arrest, arguing that his medical condition requires specialized care.
The 63-year-old lawmaker is currently facing plunder and graft charges filed by the Office of the Ombudsman over alleged kickbacks amounting to more than ₱573 million from flood control projects. The case marks the third time Estrada has been charged with plunder since 2001.

Estrada’s health concerns are not new. During his detention in connection with an earlier plunder case involving former President Joseph Estrada, reports indicated that he suffered from a heart condition, an enlarged prostate, and other medical issues.
More recently, the senator’s legal team highlighted his osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that commonly affects the knees and can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. Health experts note that the condition is prevalent among older adults and may significantly affect daily activities.

Despite his medical appeal, anti-corruption advocates and some members of the public have questioned whether health-related requests should influence the handling of corruption cases involving public officials. Discussions online have also revisited Estrada’s history of legal battles, noting that he was previously acquitted in two separate plunder cases.
The Sandiganbayan has yet to make a final ruling on Estrada’s request for hospital arrest as proceedings in the latest plunder case continue. Meanwhile, the senator has maintained his innocence and vowed to pursue all available legal remedies in response to the charges.
