Last August, this writer received an invitation for a media event somewhere in Makati. I only received the invite and I was waiting for the actual press kit for me to have more information. With little information, it became more exciting as this is something new and interesting for me to cover.
That media event is the launch of TypeKita app, powered by KUMU.
TypeKita is a chat fiction app powered by KUMU, a popular Filipino live streaming platform. Launched in August 2023, TypeKita is a localized version of the popular Thai chat story app Joylada. It is designed to empower Pinoy writers by rewarding their creativity and allowing them to earn money.
TypeKita’s chat fiction format is a modern form of storytelling that resembles an online conversation between two people. It is easier to use for both writers and readers, making it a great platform for aspiring authors and avid readers alike. The app offers a variety of genres, including romance, coming-of-age, mystery, and fantasy. It also has a strict moderation system to ensure that all content is safe and appropriate for its target audience, which is high school and college students.
During the launch, Head of Growth Ysabel Yuzon, Vice President of Strategic Management Dana de la Vega, and Creator Manager Erich Valdevioso took questions from attending members of the press and detailed the ins and outs of the app, as well as its growing potential to “open doors even for those who may not have considered writing before,” according to Yuzon. Live readings of current TypeKita favorites Babalik Sa’yo (Rej Martinez), The Day I Said Goodbye (Miyuki Jeishi), and Hush Lucas (Arki Aaron) were then performed by rising stars Nour Hooshmand, Ian Pangilinan, and Benedix Ramos, bringing to life all the ups and downs of romance in fiction. Finally, singing champion and Silver Badger Featured Live Kumu Streamer Kathleen Anne wrapped up the program with some contemporary classic love songs, as well as her own single, Nagkulang.
The app is powered by homegrown social entertainment platform Kumu—a partnership that speaks to the growing online fiction community.
