MANILA, Philippines — United States President Donald Trump is set to return to the Philippines this November to participate in the 49th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits, marking his first official visit to the country in nearly nine years.
Malacañang confirmed the American leader’s attendance on Wednesday, October 14, as the Philippines prepares to welcome regional leaders and international partners for one of Southeast Asia’s most significant diplomatic gatherings.
Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed Trump’s upcoming visit during a Palace briefing but declined to disclose further details about his itinerary and scheduled engagements.
“It is confirmed, pero iyong details ay hindi po manggagaling sa akin,” Castro said.
The 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits are scheduled for November 16 to 18, 2026, at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.
Trump’s Return to the Philippines After Nine Years
The upcoming visit will mark Trump’s first trip to the Philippines since November 2017, when he attended the 31st ASEAN Summit in Manila during his first term as US president.

His return comes at a time when Southeast Asian nations continue to navigate regional security concerns, economic uncertainties, and evolving relationships with major global powers, particularly the United States and China.
Trump’s participation is expected to draw considerable international attention, given Washington’s longstanding diplomatic, economic, and security partnerships with countries across Southeast Asia.
The United States has been an official ASEAN dialogue partner since 1977 and remains a major contributor to the region’s trade and foreign investment.
Marcos and Trump to Reconnect Amid Regional Challenges
The upcoming gathering also presents another opportunity for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Trump to engage on matters affecting Philippine–US relations.
The two leaders previously met at the White House in Washington, D.C., on July 22, 2025, where they discussed bilateral cooperation, defense partnerships, and trade relations.
They subsequently held a telephone conversation on July 23, 2026, addressing economic developments and regional security issues, including concerns surrounding the South China Sea.

With the Philippines continuing to assert its maritime rights in the West Philippine Sea, regional security and the importance of maintaining peace and stability are expected to remain prominent subjects in discussions involving ASEAN and its international partners.
However, Malacañang has yet to announce whether a separate bilateral meeting between Marcos and Trump will take place during the summit.
Philippines Prepares to Host World Leaders
As ASEAN chair for 2026, the Philippines is preparing to host heads of government, senior officials, and representatives of dialogue partner countries for discussions on regional cooperation and shared challenges.
The summit is expected to cover economic integration, digital transformation, energy security, regional stability, and maritime cooperation.
Among the anticipated discussions are efforts to strengthen ASEAN’s economic competitiveness and advance negotiations concerning a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.

The gathering will also provide an opportunity for Southeast Asian nations to reinforce their collective position on pressing regional issues while strengthening partnerships with major economies.
In preparation for the international event, President Marcos has declared November 16 to 18 as special non-working days throughout the National Capital Region.
The declaration is intended to facilitate security arrangements, traffic management, and logistical preparations for the arrival of foreign delegations.
Strengthening ASEAN’s Role on the Global Stage
Trump’s confirmed participation highlights the continuing importance of ASEAN as a platform for diplomatic engagement between Southeast Asian countries and major global powers.
For the Philippines, hosting the summit provides an opportunity to strengthen its diplomatic presence and promote cooperation on issues affecting the region’s economic and security interests.
As preparations intensify, further announcements are expected regarding the participation of other world leaders, the summit’s official agenda, and the bilateral engagements that may take place on the sidelines.
With Manila preparing to welcome international delegations, the November gathering is shaping up to be a significant diplomatic event for the Philippines and the wider Southeast Asian region.
