MANILA, Philippines — Progressive political group Akbayan commemorated its 28th anniversary this week by renewing its call for deep political reforms, urging Filipinos to reject entrenched political dynasties and work toward a more people-centered democracy ahead of the crucial 2028 elections.
At a celebration held to mark nearly three decades since its founding, party leaders reaffirmed Akbayan’s commitment to challenging traditional elite control of Philippine politics and advancing reforms they say will ensure broader participation from ordinary citizens in governance. The group’s theme for the anniversary — “Defeat Dynasties, Win with the People in 2028!” — encapsulates its strategic focus on breaking the hold of political clans and vested interests in national and local government.

In their anniversary message, Akbayan officials stressed the need for sustained grassroots engagement and collective action to confront what they describe as undemocratic dominance by political families. They urged supporters to carry forward a reform agenda that centers accountability, transparency, and inclusive representation as the country prepares for the next general elections in 2028.

The party has previously been vocal in advocating for a comprehensive anti-political dynasty bill in Congress, arguing that true democratic equality cannot be realized while power remains concentrated in the hands of a few families. Its lawmakers, together with allies, filed legislation aimed at broadening leadership opportunities and curbing dynastic control — a move Akbayan says would open democratic space for new voices across all levels of government.
Akbayan’s push comes amid broader national debates on political reform and the role of traditional elites in Philippine politics, as the country gears up for the 2028 elections, which will include the presidential contest and a new slate of legislators.
