It has officially been 20 years since Disney Channel’s High School Musical first aired—and the internet is once again singing along.
Released in January 2006, the Disney Channel Original Movie became a global pop culture phenomenon, turning its young cast into household names and inspiring an entire generation of fans. As the film marks its two-decade milestone, nostalgia has swept across social media, with the cast and fans alike sharing memories from East High.

Vanessa Hudgens (Gabriella Montez), Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay Evans), Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth), Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie), and Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans) all posted throwback photos from the 2005 filming of the movie, sparking a wave of fan reactions and tributes.

Hudgens wrote on Instagram:
“I cannot believe HSM turns 20 today. Thank you to everyone who’s been there since day one. We’ll always be in this together.”

Tisdale, who played the iconic Sharpay Evans, shared a heartfelt message of her own:
“20 years ago we had no idea what this would turn into. I’m so grateful for what this movie has given me, and for the fans who made it what it is. To be part of something this iconic, that still has new fans discovering it today, is truly wild. It keeps growing in ways I never imagined. I love you, Sharpay. And let me just say… we’re still looking fabulous!”

She also posted a video wearing one of Sharpay’s original outfits from the film, captioning it:
“20 years and two babies later, I’m still squeezing into these looks.”
A Record-Breaking Disney Phenomenon
Upon its premiere, High School Musical became an instant success, drawing 7.7 million viewers in the United States and reaching over 225 million viewers worldwide. Its popularity led to two blockbuster sequels, a sold-out concert tour, and a cultural impact that still resonates today.

Director Kenny Ortega, who helmed all three films, also shared a tribute:
“Happy 20th anniversary, Wildcats! ‘This could be the start of something new’ lives on because of all of you. With endless love and deep appreciation.”
Soundtrack That Topped the Charts
The film’s soundtrack—recorded in just five days—was released on January 10, 2006, and went on to become the best-selling album of that year. It sold more than 3.7 million copies in the U.S. and over 7 million worldwide. As of 2016, it had sold 5 million copies in the U.S., making it the best-selling TV soundtrack since 1991, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Still “Boppin’ to the Top”
Two decades later, High School Musical remains a beloved classic. Beyond the catchy songs and energetic dance numbers, the film’s message about embracing individuality, chasing dreams, and breaking free from expectations continues to inspire fans across generations.
