Last week, MNLToday.ph was among the invited media outlets for the advance screening of the long-awaited historical film Lakambini: Gregoria De Jesus. The event, held on a symbolic purple carpet, paid tribute to the strength and grace of the woman behind the name Lakambini—a true icon of courage and patriotism.
Before the screening, a press conference was held featuring the film’s cast and creators, including Gina Pareño, Elora Españo, Rocco Nacino, director Arjanmar Rebeta, Chief Executive Producer Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil, and co-producer Jeffrey Jeturian. Also in attendance was noted historian Xiao Chua, who shared valuable insights about the historical significance of Gregoria de Jesus and her role in the Katipunan.

The film’s production began as early as 2013, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it was halted and remained unfinished for over a decade. Now, 12 years later, Lakambini: Gregoria De Jesus is finally set to hit cinemas nationwide on November 5, 2025—a long-overdue homage to one of Philippine history’s most remarkable women.

Gregoria De Jesus was portrayed by Lovi Poe, who first brought life to the young Lakambini. The role was later shared with Elora Españo, who continued the character’s emotional journey on screen. The film also stars Rocco Nacino as Gat Andres Bonifacio and features the special participation of Paulo Avelino as Julio Nakpil. Gina Pareño plays the elder Gregoria de Jesus, while Spanky Manikan portrays the older Julio Nakpil—both adding depth and poignancy to the film’s later scenes.
As a fan of historical films, I consider myself fortunate to have seen this masterpiece ahead of its release. With TBA Studios’ Quezon also making waves in local cinema, it’s heartening to see that Filipino audiences are once again embracing historical narratives—especially those that highlight the strength of women in our nation’s history.

Gregoria de Jesus is more than just the wife of Katipunan founder Gat Andres Bonifacio. She is a symbol of bravery, integrity, and love for country. Known as the Lakambini ng Katipunan, she played a pivotal role in the revolution—not merely as Bonifacio’s partner, but as a revolutionary herself who risked everything for the cause.
The film beautifully portrays her journey: her determination to stand beside her husband, her resilience in times of sorrow, and her unwavering love not only for him but for the Philippines. It reveals a woman who endured unimaginable loss—her family, her child, and her husband—yet never faltered in her devotion to freedom and justice.

Watching the movie, I felt her pain, her longing, and her quiet strength. Every frame captured her humanity—the courage to fight, the heartbreak she endured, and the strength to rise again. It’s a deeply moving portrayal that allows viewers to see Gregoria de Jesus not merely as “the Supremo’s wife,” but as a hero in her own right.
Until the very end, her story carries both sorrow and triumph. Lakambini: Gregoria De Jesus reminds us to honor her not just as the shadow of Andres Bonifacio or Julio Nakpil, but as a woman who embodied the soul of the revolution.

May we always remember her legacy—her sacrifice, her love, and her power—as the true Lakambini of the Filipino people.
Lakabini : Gregoria De Jesus is available next week, November 5, 2025 in cinemas nationwide, congratulations to the team behind this amazing movie!
