Philvocs reported the quake was measured at magnitude 7.1 east southeast of Dolores town in Abra. It had a depth of 10 kilometers.
The massive tremor severely destroyed buildings in Northern Luzon, including historic and culturally significant structures, produced landslides, and forced people to escape. Rail services in the capital region have also been suspended by authorities.
After the massive earthquake, Phivolcs issued a warning to the public that there is a possibility of more damage and aftershocks.
