MANILA, Philippines — The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), together with Centro Escolar University (CEU), commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Sofia Reyes de Veyra, a pioneering advocate for women’s suffrage, education, and nursing in the Philippines, on September 30, 2026.
The commemoration honored De Veyra’s contributions to the advancement of Filipino women and her role in promoting greater participation of women in Philippine society.
The program began with a Mass, followed by commemorative messages and floral offerings from representatives of the NHCP and CEU. The event also featured performances by the CEU Concert Band and CEU Dance Troupe.
Born Sofia Tiaozon Reyes De Veyra, she became one of the pioneering voices for women’s suffrage in the country at a time when Filipino women were seeking greater political and social participation.
Her advocacy emphasized the belief that women should have an active role not only in their families and communities but also in shaping the future of the nation.
“In life, woman is man’s partner, sharing with him the joys and sorrows, helping him to solve life’s problems. Why can she not also take part in shaping the destiny of the nation?”
The statement reflected De Veyra’s push for equality and women’s participation in national affairs.
Beyond advocating for women’s suffrage, De Veyra was actively involved in several women’s organizations, including the National Federation of Women’s Clubs, Manila Women’s Club, and Catholic Women’s League.
Her contributions also extended to healthcare and education. De Veyra founded the Union Mission Hospital Training School for Nurses, recognized as one of the oldest nursing training institutions in the Philippines.
The commemoration highlighted De Veyra’s legacy as part of the broader history of Filipino women who helped advance equality, education, and civic participation in the country.
The NHCP continues to promote and preserve Philippine history and heritage through historical research and publication, the administration of national shrines and museums, conservation initiatives, and the preservation and marking of historic sites and structures.
