LOS ANGELES — The United States kicked off its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in impressive fashion, defeating Paraguay 4-1 before a packed crowd at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Friday. The match marked the Americans’ first World Cup game on home soil since hosting the tournament in 1994.
Forward Folarin Balogun starred for the U.S., scoring twice in a commanding first-half performance that helped the hosts establish a comfortable lead. The Americans struck early after Paraguay conceded an own goal following a dangerous run by Christian Pulisic, who later assisted Balogun’s first goal. Balogun added a second just before halftime as the United States entered the break firmly in control.

Paraguay managed to pull one back late in the second half through substitute Mauricio, but Gio Reyna restored the three-goal cushion with a late strike to seal the victory. The win marked the first time the United States scored four goals in a World Cup match.
U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his squad’s collective effort, emphasizing that the result was built on teamwork rather than individual performances. While Balogun and Pulisic drew much of the attention, Pochettino credited the entire team and coaching staff for the strong start to the tournament.

The victory was witnessed by more than 70,000 spectators, with several celebrities in attendance as the World Cup festivities continued across North America. The 2026 edition is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the U.S. hosting the majority of matches.
However, the Americans may face an injury concern heading into their next fixture after Pulisic was substituted at halftime due to calf tightness. His status for the team’s upcoming Group D matches remains uncertain.

With three points secured from their opening match, the United States has taken an early lead in Group D and will look to build on the momentum as it continues its quest for a deep run in the first World Cup hosted on American soil in more than three decades.
