NAGA CITY — Leni Robredo has ruled out a return to national politics in the 2028 elections, signaling her intent to focus on local governance as mayor of Naga City.
Robredo said she has no plans to seek any national post in 2028, opting instead to concentrate on serving her constituents at the local level. Her decision aligns with her earlier commitment to remain in Naga and complete her term as mayor, following her landslide victory in the 2025 elections.
Her announcement comes amid continued calls from allies and supporters for her to mount another national campaign after her 2022 presidential bid.

Former senator Antonio Trillanes IV, however, said Robredo’s decision opens the door for other opposition figures to take the lead in the next presidential race.
Trillanes urged Robredo to instead endorse either Bam Aquino or Risa Hontiveros as the opposition’s standard-bearer in 2028.
“If she is not running, it would be better for her to endorse either Bam or Risa so that her support base can be transferred to them,” Trillanes said on the sidelines of House proceedings.

He added that his group is inclined to support Hontiveros, citing her qualifications and track record as a public servant.
Robredo has yet to publicly respond to Trillanes’ suggestion. However, her decision to stay out of the national race is expected to reshape the opposition’s strategy heading into the 2028 elections, as potential candidates begin to consolidate support.
Political observers note that Robredo remains one of the most influential figures in the opposition, and any endorsement from her could significantly impact the race.
