San Miguel Beer tapped its assistant coach Boycie Zamar to lead the franchise as it gambles into a new front of PBA 3×3.
Zamar, who joined SMB in 2014 as one of Leo Austria’s deputies, is now facing the challenge of sustaining the Beermen’s winning streaks in the pro league’s inaugural three-a-side competitions.
“Sa trabaho naman namin as coaches, meron talagang pressure, kahit anong trabaho for that matter (Pressure is part of our job as coaches),” Zamar told in the interview.
The former national team mentor said the first move is to create a stronger fighting crew for the 3×3.
“Yung initial goal namin for now is makabuo ng competitive at cohesive na 3×3 team (Our initial goal is to be able to form a competitive and cohesive 3×3 team),” said Zamar confidently.
He did not name the players that are set to carry the flagship of the Beermen in the standalone tournament, and PBA is looking to launch a week after the Philippine Cup opening.
PBA teams took a long break in practices since the National Capital Region and the four nearby provinces are now under enhanced community quarantine.
“Praying makabalik na sa GCQ para payagan na mag-train ulit ang mga PBA teams, including 3×3 (We hope and pray we revert back to general community quarantine so PBA teams and 3×3 teams can return to training),” said Zamar with high hopes.
The league delayed its plan to kick off the last April 18 kickoff as a result of the surge of COVID-19 cases is unstoppable and getting higher again after the many movements of people. Commissioner Willie Marcial is now hoping and looking forward that they can start the All-Filipino by the last week of April or the first week of May.
