I do not believe in ghosts, but I must admit that I cannot help but be fascinated with ghost stories. Especially during those dark nights when I am alone or I get that eerie feeling that I am being watched. “It’s all in my imagination.” I whisper to myself, “Ghosts aren’t real”…Or are they?
According to Benjamin Radford, author of “Are Ghosts Real? – Evidence Has Not Materialized” published in www.livescience.com, the reason why people believe in ghosts is because of their personal experience. Almost all of the evidence that are supernatural comes from eye witness accounts. From seeing the “White Lady” in the middle of Balete Drive, or befriending a “Duwende” in our backyard. However, studies show that people who claim that they have seen a ghost are uncertain with what they have experienced. This uncertainty leaves us intrigue.
This Halloween, Team PRC Inc. shares their own personal scary stories. Though some believe their experience was real, others think it was all illusion.
But what are ghosts? Quite simply, ghosts are disembodied spirits of the dead dwelling among the living. People believe that once you die, your soul goes either to find rest in heaven or to be punished in hell. There are some souls, however, that gets stuck in limbo. Some are stuck haunting the living.
Experts and amateurs go to great lengths to prove that ghost are real. Devices such as high frequency radio devices and infrared cameras are invented to get concrete evidence.
If there is no solid evidence that ghosts exist, what do we make of the testimonies of the people who claim to have experienced them? Science explains that it is our brain and eyes who make up this illusion. At an early age, when our imaginations are developing the fastest, some of the products of these imaginings might stay with us as we get older, making us confuse reality with make-believe. One study called “the vanishing head illusion” emphasizes that a man’s head disappears when you look at a certain distance.
Whether you believe in ghosts or not, at the end of the day, lack of evidence does not disprove the existence of the supernatural.
So, we end where we started, with the question, are ghosts real? There is only one way to find out. And that is for you to have your own ghost story.
