Broadway celebrated three decades of music, love, and community as the iconic musical RENT reunited its original stars and generations of performers for a special anniversary concert that raised more than $4.57 million for charity.
Held on October 26, 2026, at New York City’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, RENT, the 30th Anniversary Concert brought together familiar faces and Broadway favorites to honor the legacy of the late playwright and composer Jonathan Larson.
The one-night-only benefit raised an impressive $4,571,464 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, an organization dedicated to helping individuals affected by HIV/AIDS and other serious illnesses.
Original Stars Return to Celebrate a Broadway Classic
The anniversary celebration featured the return of original Broadway cast members Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Wilson Jermaine Heredia, among others.x
They were joined by performers from different generations of RENT productions, along with Broadway stars including Neil Patrick Harris, Aaron Tveit, Rachel Zegler, and Jordan Fisher.

Anthony Rapp, who originated the role of Mark Cohen, opened the evening with the musical’s opening monologue and dedicated the performance to Larson.
Audiences were treated to memorable performances of beloved songs, including “Seasons of Love,” “Take Me or Leave Me,” “Out Tonight,” and “I’ll Cover You.”

The concert also reunited members of the show’s original creative team, with director Michael Greif returning to lead the production and music supervisor Tim Weil overseeing the musical performances.
A Celebration That Reached Beyond Broadway
The milestone event extended beyond the theater through a special livestream organized in partnership with the League of Live Stream Theater.
More than 70,000 viewers watched remotely, allowing fans from around the world to take part in the celebration.
The Gates Foundation also supported the fundraising initiative by matching eligible livestream-related donations up to $525,600, a meaningful reference to the musical’s famous song “Seasons of Love.”
ViiV Healthcare served as the event’s presenting sponsor.
Three Decades of Love, Hope, and Lasting Impact
First staged in 1996, RENT became one of Broadway’s most influential musicals, earning four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème, the musical follows a group of young artists navigating relationships, financial struggles, identity, and the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York City.

Its powerful storytelling and unforgettable music helped bring conversations about acceptance, compassion, and community to mainstream theater audiences.
Thirty years later, those themes continue to resonate with fans across generations.
Beyond celebrating the musical’s artistic achievements, the anniversary concert highlighted its enduring humanitarian message.
Proceeds from the event will help Broadway Cares provide grants supporting access to medication, nutritious meals, counseling, emergency financial assistance, and other essential services for vulnerable communities.

For longtime fans and new audiences alike, the anniversary served as a reminder that RENT is more than a Broadway production. It is a story about connection, resilience, and the importance of caring for one another.
Three decades after its debut, RENT continues to inspire audiences to celebrate life, embrace community, and measure the moments that matter through love.
