MANILA, Philippines — The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) celebrated 93 years of preserving the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage with a Fellowship and Partners Recognition Program held on October 22, 2026, at the historic Metropolitan Theater in Manila.
Carrying the theme “Kasaysayang Nag-Uugnay,” the celebration highlighted the power of history to connect Filipinos through shared experiences, collective memories, and a common national identity.
The event also served as an opportunity to recognize the institutions, organizations, and individuals whose continued support has helped the NHCP fulfill its mission of promoting historical awareness, preserving heritage sites, and making Philippine history more accessible to communities.
Honoring 93 Years of Historical Preservation
In his anniversary message, NHCP Chairperson Regalado Trota Jose Jr. reflected on the Commission’s achievements and its enduring responsibility to safeguard the nation’s historical legacy.

He emphasized that the anniversary was more than a celebration of institutional milestones. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the Commission’s commitment to preserving the stories, struggles, and achievements that have shaped the Filipino nation.
For more than nine decades, the NHCP has played a significant role in historical research, conservation, education, and public engagement, ensuring that future generations remain connected to the country’s past.
NHCP Introduces SANDAAN Strategy 2027–2031
One of the highlights of the anniversary program was the unveiling of SANDAAN: The NHCP Strategy 2027–2031, a new five-year strategic framework designed to guide the Commission as it approaches its centennial anniversary in 2033.
NHCP Executive Director Carminda R. Arevalo formally introduced the strategy, outlining the Commission’s institutional direction and priorities for the coming years.

The new roadmap builds on the accomplishments of the NHCP NEW NORMAL Strategic Plan 2022–2026, whose successful conclusion was presented by Deputy Executive Director Alvin R. Alcid during the program.
SANDAAN will serve as a guide for strengthening the Commission’s programs and operations while supporting the ongoing Dekada ng Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas 2023–2033, a decade-long initiative dedicated to promoting greater appreciation of Philippine history.
With the Commission’s 100th anniversary approaching, the strategic plan represents another step toward sustaining historical preservation efforts and expanding public participation in heritage-related initiatives.
Recognizing Partners in Heritage Preservation
The anniversary celebration also paid tribute to the individuals and institutions that have contributed to the NHCP’s programs, projects, and historical preservation initiatives.

Among those recognized were SM Cares, Atty. Saul Hofileña Jr., the University of the Philippines Diliman Main Library, the National Library of the Philippines, and the City Government of Biñan through its City History, Arts, and Tourism Office.
The Commission also honored the Municipal Government of Guiuan in Eastern Samar, the Association of Volunteer Fire Chief and Firefighters of the Philippines, and the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage – Basilan Provincial Office.

Completing the roster of honorees were the Metropolitan Theater Operations Division of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and retired Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio.
Their recognition underscored the importance of collaboration between government agencies, academic institutions, private organizations, and individuals in protecting the country’s historical and cultural treasures.
Bringing Philippine History to Life Through the Arts
Beyond the formal recognition ceremony, the celebration featured cultural performances that showcased the connection between history and artistic expression.
Cast members of Tanghalang Pilipino’s Gregoria Lakambini and Sayaw ng mga Ilaw brought historical narratives to life through theatrical performances.

Filipino singer-songwriter Bayang Barrios, together with the Naligayan Band, also performed Lilipad, adding a musical highlight to the anniversary celebration.
The program concluded with a fellowship dinner at the Metropolitan Theater Ballroom, where NHCP officials, personnel, partners, and guests gathered to celebrate their shared commitment to Philippine history.
Looking Ahead to 100 Years of Service
The Fellowship and Partners Recognition Program was among the activities organized for the NHCP’s weeklong 93rd Founding Anniversary celebration, held from October 19 to 23, 2026.
As the Commission prepares for its centennial in 2033, the theme “Kasaysayang Nag-Uugnay” reinforces the importance of collective participation in preserving the nation’s historical identity.

Through continued partnerships, historical research, educational initiatives, and heritage conservation, the NHCP aims to ensure that the lessons and stories of the past remain relevant to present and future generations.
The celebration served as a reminder that Philippine history is not simply a record of the past, but a continuing connection between the people, places, and experiences that shape the nation’s identity.
