Motorists traveling back to Metro Manila on Sunday, April 19, are advised to prepare for heavy traffic along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), as thousands of travelers are expected to return from weekend trips and short provincial getaways.
Traffic buildup is anticipated, particularly along the southbound lanes of the expressway, where vehicles from Northern and Central Luzon typically converge en route to the capital. Authorities said congestion may begin as early as late morning and could intensify throughout the afternoon and evening, considered peak return hours for motorists.
Key chokepoints are expected at major toll plazas, including Balintawak and Bocaue, as well as at busy interchanges where merging traffic often slows down vehicle flow. These areas have historically experienced bottlenecks during high-volume travel periods, especially on Sundays and at the end of long weekends.

Traffic officials explained that the expected surge is due to the consistent pattern of outbound travel during Saturdays, followed by a mass return to Metro Manila the next day. With more Filipinos opting for quick out-of-town trips, expressways like NLEX have seen increased vehicle volume in recent months.
Aside from private vehicles, buses and delivery trucks are also expected to contribute to the heavier traffic conditions, further affecting travel speed. Motorists may experience extended travel times compared to regular weekdays, with stop-and-go traffic likely in several sections of the expressway.
In response, traffic management teams and tollway personnel are expected to be deployed across strategic points along NLEX to help manage vehicle flow and assist motorists. Authorities may also implement traffic control measures if congestion worsens.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to plan their trips ahead of time, check real-time traffic updates, and consider alternative travel schedules. Leaving earlier in the day or later in the evening may help avoid peak congestion hours.
Drivers are also reminded to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before hitting the road and to maintain patience and discipline while driving, especially in heavy traffic situations.
As the volume of vehicles continues to rise, authorities stress the importance of road safety and cooperation among motorists to ensure smoother travel for everyone returning to the metro.
