South Korean girl group Red Velvet has officially returned to the music scene with the release of their new summer mini album, “Velvet Summer,” on Aug. 3, marking their first full-group comeback in more than two years.
Leading the five-track EP is the title song “Surfin’ Boy,” a dance-pop track infused with bossa nova guitar, reggae rhythms, and house grooves. The song captures the carefree spirit of summer while highlighting Red Velvet’s signature vocal harmonies. Member Joy also participated in writing the lyrics, making the release even more meaningful for fans.
The comeback marks the reunion of all five members, Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy, and Yeri, following their previous group release, “Cosmic,” in June 2024. During the hiatus, each member pursued individual activities, including solo music releases, acting projects, variety show appearances, and brand endorsements.
Red Velvet’s return has been one of the most anticipated K-pop comebacks of the year, with fans welcoming the group back after an extended break from full-group promotions. Ahead of the album’s release, the group also reunited with fans through their fan concert, “A Day in Red & Velvet,” held in Seoul, where tickets sold out during the presale period.
Since debuting under SM Entertainment in 2014, Red Velvet has established itself as one of K-pop’s most influential girl groups. The quintet is known for seamlessly blending two contrasting musical identities: the bright and playful “Red” concept and the elegant, sophisticated “Velvet” concept.
Over the years, the group has built an impressive catalog of hits, including “Red Flavor,” “Power Up,” “Bad Boy,” “Psycho,” “Queendom,” and “Feel My Rhythm.” Their ability to explore different genres while maintaining a distinct identity has earned
them critical acclaim and a dedicated global fanbase.
With “Velvet Summer,” Red Velvet once again embraces the season that helped define much of their career. The mini album continues their tradition of delivering refreshing summer anthems while introducing a more mature and refined sound through “Surfin’ Boy.” The EP features five tracks that showcase the group’s vocal chemistry and
