Bethesda Game Studios has offered a fresh update on the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6, with studio director Todd Howard confirming that the next entry in the long-running fantasy RPG series will steer back toward the company’s traditional style of game that made earlier titles like Skyrim and Oblivion fan favorites.

In a recent interview on the Kinda Funny Gamescast, Howard described the upcoming Elder Scrolls sequel as a return to the “classic style” that has defined the studio’s core identity, suggesting that recent titles such as Fallout 76 and Starfieldrepresented creative detours rather than reflections of the franchise’s roots.
“We have a style of game that we really, really like — that our fans like — that we want to get better and better at,” Howard said, emphasizing Bethesda’s desire to focus on immersive, richly detailed worlds where exploration and discovery are central to the experience.

Though details about the game’s setting and specifics remain tightly guarded, Howard noted that development is progressing and that the studio is approaching a significant internal milestone as work continues. However, he cautioned that fans should still expect a long wait before the game reaches release.
A major part of Bethesda’s renewed focus is the use of its updated Creation Engine 3, an evolution of the technology that powered Starfield and other recent titles. According to Howard, this upgraded engine will not only drive The Elder Scrolls 6 but also serve as the technical foundation for future projects.
While official release timing remains unannounced, Howard’s comments underline Bethesda’s commitment to recapturing the narrative depth and exploration-driven gameplay that helped make earlier Elder Scrolls games benchmarks in the RPG genre.
