Good news for fans of Soman Chainani’s best-selling YA series, The School for Good and Evil, and fantasy fans in general. The series is finally being made into a movie and has already been touted as one of his most anticipated movies of 2022. Even if the book’s message was simpler and aimed at a much younger audience, the adaptation could go a different route.
Netflix bought Universal Pictures a few years ago and turned the series into a live-action feature film. However, the long wait has finally come to an end this year. Paul Feig, creator of the comedy series Freaks and Geeks and director of such hits as Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy and Ghostbusters (2016), will direct the film adaptation for Netflix. In addition to working on the script, Chainani also serves as an executive producer.
First published in 2013, this series has a lot of similarities with the world of Once Upon A Time and Harry Potter. There are skeletal birds (like Thestrals), an eerie forest (like the Forbidden Forest), and people transfiguring into other creatures (like animagus or metamorphmagus witches and wizards in Potterverse). There is even a tournament called the Trial by Tale, very similar to the Triwizard tournament.
In The School for Good and Evil, when best friends Sophie (Sophie Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) are drawn into a school of magic, they find themselves on opposite sides in an epic battle. Will they succeed or will they fall apart? The School of Good and Evil has the answer.
The gothic fantasy adventure film will delight fans of the original and is sure to attract new fans to this amazingly rich world. It’s time to wrap up the plot, cast and everything we know so far about the movie School of Good and Evil.
In this enchanting facility, children are trained to be fairytale heroes and villains. Sophie and Agatha discover more about their true selves and motivations as they embark on adventures that confront stereotypes of “pure” and “evil.” They also question the notions of friendship and true love – inherently silly and dualistic – set in their world by the standards of fairy tales.
However, Chainani had suggested a while back that the story in the adaptations of his books would be treated differently, saying:
And indeed, Netflix gives a different touch to the adventures of Sophie and Agatha, one in which love, secrets, mystery, and the past will play a determining role.
