Batangas 2nd District Representative Gery Mandanas Leviste has officially purchased the historic house in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany, where the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, resided in 1886. This significant cultural acquisition ensures that the three-story stone building, located at Hauptstraße 127, remains connected to Filipino heritage rather than being sold to private developers or repurposed for commercial use. It was within these walls, under the hospitality of Pastor Karl Ullmer, that Rizal completed the final chapters of his transformative novel, Noli Me Tangere, making the site one of the most sacred locations in the history of the Philippine propaganda movement.

The purchase was driven by a desire to preserve the legacy of the national hero and prevent the property from falling into disrepair or being altered in a way that erases its historical context. Representative Leviste has expressed his intention to maintain the home as a landmark of Filipino-German friendship and a place of pilgrimage for Filipinos traveling through Europe. The house still features a commemorative plaque installed years ago, and the surrounding area includes the Rizal Park in Wilhelmsfeld, which features a life-sized statue of the hero, further cementing the town’s unique bond with the Philippines.

Moving forward, the acquisition is expected to pave the way for a more formalized preservation effort, potentially turning portions of the residence into a museum or a cultural center. By securing this property, the Filipino community gains a permanent foothold in the very town where Rizal refined his ideas on liberty and national identity while studying ophthalmology in nearby Heidelberg. This act of private preservation serves as a vital contribution to national history, ensuring that future generations can visit the actual rooms where the “Great Plebeian” penned the words that eventually sparked a revolution across the seas.
