HBO is developing a television adaptation of the critically acclaimed fantasy role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3, with The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin set to write, showrun and executive produce the new series. The project — derived from the Dungeons & Dragons-based RPG developed by Larian Studios — will continue the narrative of the game rather than retell it, picking up after the events that players experienced in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The announcement from the premium cable network and streaming outlet builds on the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which has won numerous awards and become one of the most talked-about storytelling RPGs in recent years. While Larian’s upcoming projects focus on other games, the show will explore fresh storylines with both new and familiar characters from the Baldur’s Gate universe.
Mazin’s involvement follows his high-profile work on HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, where he helped translate the beloved video game into a critically acclaimed TV drama. For the Baldur’s Gate series, he said that after spending “nearly 1,000 hours” immersed in the game’s world, he is excited to bring its characters and rich lore to television audiences, working with Hasbro Entertainment — the current rights holder of the Dungeons & Dragons IP.

The yet-untitled show is expected to feature a blend of narrative continuity and original storytelling, reflecting the complex choices and world-building that made Baldur’s Gate 3 a standout hit among players and critics alike.
While an official release date has not been announced, the series represents another major expansion of videogame culture into mainstream scripted television, following the trend set by successful game-to-screen adaptations like The Last of Usand others in recent years.
