Iloilo City, Philippines — Tragedy struck in Iloilo as Dueñas Vice Mayor Aimee Paz Lamasan died following an apparent accidental shooting at her home in La Paz, Iloilo City. Authorities are now requesting a paraffin (gunshot residue) test on her live-in partner as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police said the incident occurred on the morning of December 30, 2025, when Lamasan, 49, was reportedly organizing her belongings at their residence. A 9‑mm pistol she was handling discharged, striking her in the abdomen. She was rushed to St. Paul’s Hospital but succumbed to her injuries the following day, December 31.
Investigation underway
Police Captain Jeffrey Delgado, chief of Iloilo City Police Station 2, confirmed that Lamasan’s partner, Lord Byron Torrecarion, is the only person who was with her at the time of the incident. “We already sent a request for a paraffin test to the vice mayor’s partner. That’s one of the things we have to do,” Delgado said, noting that ballistic and firearm ownership verification are also ongoing.

The Iloilo City Police Office stressed that while the firearm discharge is being treated as accidental, investigators remain open to other angles until all forensic results are available. Major Shella Sangrines, ICPO spokesperson, said authorities are carefully reviewing evidence to ensure a thorough and transparent probe.
Community reactions
The news of Lamasan’s death shocked colleagues and constituents alike. Dueñas Mayor Robert Martin Pama described the vice mayor as a dedicated public servant whose leadership left a meaningful impact on the community. Local officials and residents have expressed grief over the loss of a committed public figure just as the province welcomed the new year.

Lamasan, elected vice mayor in the 2025 local elections, is remembered not only for her service but also for her close ties with the community. Deputy Speaker and Iloilo 4th District Representative Ferjenel Biron paid tribute to her integrity and compassion, calling her passing “a profound loss for the province.”
Authorities continue to await the results of the paraffin test, ballistic examination, and other forensic procedures as the investigation into the incident progresses. Meanwhile, Lamasan’s family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
