Maynilad Water Services, Inc. has officially inaugurated the Tunasan Water Reclamation Facility in Muntinlupa City, marking a significant milestone in the company’s mission to enhance wastewater management in the southern portion of its concession area. As the 25th wastewater treatment facility in Maynilad’s network, this plant is strategically located along Buendia Street in Barangay Tunasan and represents a critical investment in public health and environmental sustainability. The facility is designed to treat up to 20 million liters of used water per day, providing essential sewerage services to approximately 83,000 customers within the Tunasan catchment area.
The newly opened plant utilizes the Modified Ludzack–Ettinger process, a modern biological treatment technology that effectively removes pollutants from wastewater before it is safely discharged into Bubogan Creek. This high level of treatment ensures that the facility complies with the stringent effluent quality standards set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources under Administrative Order 2021-19. By funneling used water from the Magdaong, Bubogan, and Tunasan Creeks through 1.4 kilometers of sewer pipelines, Maynilad is taking active steps to reduce the pollution load entering Laguna de Bay, which serves as a vital economic and ecological lifeline for the surrounding communities.

This inauguration follows the recent commissioning of the Cupang Water Reclamation Facility, which added another 46 million liters of treatment capacity to Muntinlupa’s infrastructure. Together, these facilities represent a massive leap forward for the city’s sanitation services and contribute to Maynilad’s total wastewater treatment capacity of 790 million liters per day across the West Zone. Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez emphasized that these projects are more than just infrastructure; they are a long-term commitment to ensuring that as urban communities grow, they do so alongside a healthy and protected environment.

The completion of the Tunasan plant was a collaborative effort involving the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, the Laguna Lake Development Authority, and the local government of Muntinlupa. It forms a core part of Maynilad’s multi-billion peso capital expenditure program, which aims to modernize the region’s water system and future-proof the environment against the challenges of rapid urbanization. As the facility enters full operation, residents can expect a cleaner local ecosystem and a more robust sanitation network that sets a new standard for responsible water management in the Philippines.
