Unknown to many, I practice Yoga. I have tried Ashtanga but it is Bikram that really got me.
It was years ago when I tried my first Bikram Yoga and I liked it very much that me and my wife returned to the Bikram Studio in Greenhills. This was pre-pandemic and different health activities can be found within the confides of our office in San Juan.
Unfortunately, the Bikram Studio in Connecticut Street in Greenhills, San Juan, closed and for a time, we have no idea where we can attend the nearest Bikram Yoga studio.
The good thing, we discovered Wellness and Yoga in The Grove and it literally gave me and my wife the groove back to practice once again Bikram Yoga.
Bikram yoga, a style known for its rigorous sequence and scorching hot rooms, has become a fitness phenomenon. Developed by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s, Bikram yoga is a specific sequence of 26 postures (asanas) and two breathing exercises (pranayama) performed in a room heated to a staggering 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40°C) with 40% humidity. This intense heat differentiates Bikram from other yoga styles. Proponents believe the warmth loosens muscles, allowing for deeper stretches and increased flexibility. The heat also induces a serious sweat, which some say helps detoxify the body.
Bikram yoga enthusiasts tout a range of benefits from the practice. The increased flexibility can improve range of motion and potentially reduce pain. The deep stretches may also improve posture and core strength. Bikram’s focus on sweating is thought to promote detoxification and weight loss, though some experts recommend consulting a doctor before starting any program for weight management. Beyond the physical, Bikram yoga can also enhance mental focus and reduce stress, similar to other yoga practices.
Wellness and Yoga has several instructors. Most of them are foreigners who have been travelling around the world practicing Bikram Yoga. I have to agree that my practice enables me to heal, mentally and physically. As I do my regular workout like basketball, running and going to the gym, whatever pain I get from these exercises, Bikram Yoga heals it. The mere stretching and the sweltering heat during practice, it is the perfect recharge for my ageing body.
But just a reminder to everyone. I invite you to try Bikram Yoga but always listen to your body. Because the intense heat of Bikram yoga isn’t for everyone. People with certain health conditions, such as heart problems or high blood pressure, should consult a doctor before participating. Hydration is crucial in Bikram classes, so be sure to bring a water bottle and listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or faint, take a break and cool down.
If you’re curious about Bikram yoga, it’s important to find a reputable studio with experienced instructors. Many studios offer introductory classes to help newcomers adjust to the heat and postures. For those interested and living within Pasig, there is WELLNESS and YOGA at the Grove. You will be welcomed by very accommodating practitioners and the teachers are very nice as well.
Bikram yoga can be a challenging but rewarding practice. With the right preparation and an open mind, you might just find yourself sweating your way to a stronger, more flexible you.
