The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is on a mission to enhance the well-being of elderly Filipinos through its “Healthy Aging Program for PinoY (Happy) Senior Citizen.” This initiative focuses on developing food products enriched with essential nutrients to support the health and enjoyment of advanced years.
DOST is set to create a one-beverage and one-snack food using mature green tomatoes (MGT). Mature green tomatoes contain gamma-aminobutyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter known for its health benefits to the nervous and immune systems. The project team has already experimented with MGT powder in various food products, including biscuits, chicken nuggets, skinless longganisa (sausage), and tomato sauce.
Initiated in September 2022 and unveiled by Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. on October 12, the program aims to determine the impact of consuming these innovative products on the muscle strength and physical performance of older adults. The project, monitored by the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, is expected to be completed by August 2024.
The multidisciplinary team involved in the “Happy Senior Citizen” project will assess nutrition, function, anthropometric measures, biochemical measures, and geriatric assessments of senior citizens. The goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of their nutritional status and overall well-being.
In addition to developing nutrient-rich food items, the DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) is actively working on nutrition tools like the Philippine Food Composition Tables, the Philippine Dietary Reference Intakes, and the Food Exchange Lists (FEL) for Meal Planning. These tools contribute to promoting healthy living among senior citizens.
The DOST, through the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, is supporting the creation of rice varieties with a low glycemic index (GI) value. These rice varieties offer an alternative option for Filipinos concerned about blood sugar levels.
DOST’s commitment to the “Happy Senior Citizen” program reflects a dedication to advancing the health and quality of life for the elderly population in the Philippines. As the project progresses, it aims to introduce innovative and nutritionally rich food options while providing valuable tools and resources for promoting overall well-being among senior citizens.
