DONSOL, Sorsogon – One of the biggest food and beverage manufacturers Nestlé Philippines has entered into an agreement with the World Wide Fund for Nature – Philippines (WWF-PH) to achieve one of its urgent priority of tackling plastic waste towards a waste-free future.
Sorsogon shares a border with the Ticao-Burias Pass Protected Seascape (TBPPS) which is a critical habitat and home to the endangered whale shark.
Since 1998, WWF-Philippines has been a long time partner of the local government unit of Donsol on the conservation of whale sharks.
Nestlé Philippines partnered with the WWF-Philippines to support Kalipunan ng Liping Pilipina (KALIPI) in Donsol in their operation expansion and the pilot run of NAKAMOTO.
KALIPI Donsol combat the threat of plastic pollution in the TBPPS by collecting plastic waste both from the beach and local government waste collection service, and upcycling it to various handmade products. This helps fight plastic pollution in the area and create new livelihood opportunities in the community.
NAKAMOTO in its pilot run, is a solution to collect wastes from 6 barangays in Donsol that is not serviced by the municipal waste collection system through the use of motorcycles.
It aims to collect segregated wastes from barangays and bring it to the municipal composting area for biodegradables, partner junkshops for recyclables, and KALIPI for residual wastes.
Nestlé Philippines Chairman and CEO Kais Marzouki said: “This Partnership with WWF-Philippines gives us the opportunity to work with KALIPI and help pilot NAKAMOTO to advance waste collection, segregation, and recycling in Donsol.”
This initiative is part of Nestlé Philippines commitment in achieving plastic neutrality on a monthly basis started last August 2020. Nestlé Philippines is actively supporting the mandated Extended Producer Responsibility scheme for plastic waste in the country. Also, they pursue the reduction of plastics and redesigning its packaging to make these more recyclable.
