Noted for his service during the Marawi City attack by the Islamic State-inspired Maute group, Brig. Gen. Ramiro Rey has been appointed to lead the Northern Luzon Command; replacing Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat.

Nolcom’s operations cover the New People’s Army in the Northern Luzon area, Scarborough Shoal, Batanes Islands, and the Philippine Rise.

With Rey’s history as Socom commander, chief of the Philippine Army’s Special Forces, and a battalion commander, Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr. expressed great confidence upon confirming Rey on July 5 at Camp Aquino, Tarlac.

In addition, Rey’s origins gives leverage to the position. “[Rey] is from Tuguegarao, essentially from Nolcom area, so he very well knows the language there. He also knows the people there and he is an exceptional leader.” Madrigal states.
