MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Crising has morphed into Tropical Storm Crising, gaining strength as it barrels toward Northern Luzon. As of Friday morning, PAGASA reported maximum sustained winds of 65 kph, with gusts up to 80 kph, now prompting the issuance of Signal No. 2 for key provinces in the Cagayan–Babuyan Islands region.

The storm is predicted to make landfall over the Babuyan Islands or northern Cagayan later today or early Saturday and may further intensify into a severe tropical storm around landfall. Coastal and upland areas are expected to experience heavy rainfall, flooding, landslides, and rough seas, with storm surge warnings — including a possible 1–2 meter surge — now in effect for coastal towns in Cagayan and Isabela.
Disaster Preparedness in Full Swing
The Office of Civil Defense (OCD), under the Department of National Defense, has activated readiness measures nationwide. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center (NDRRMOC) has been placed on red alert, and all affiliated agencies — including the AFP, PNP, Philippine Coast Guard, and BFP — have activated officers on standby. OCD spokesperson Junie Castillo confirmed that food, non-food items, equipment, and personnel have been prepositioned, and coordination with LGUs is ongoing to ensure rapid response.

Representatives from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) are also mobilizing: over three million family food packs and essential non-food items have been pre-positioned across more than 900 storage facilities to support families in affected regions.
Widespread Impact Expected
While Crising heads for the north, its presence is enhancing the southwest monsoon (Habagat), bringing scattered rain to other parts of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. PAGASA has warned Metro Manila and surrounding provinces to stay on alert for sudden downpours and gusty winds.

As of Friday morning, more than 7,500 families across Mindanao and Visayas have already felt the effects of Crising’s outer rainbands, with flooding and minor landslides reported.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to heed local advisories. Residents in high-risk areas are encouraged to prepare emergency kits, monitor official updates, and be ready to evacuate if necessary.
