No. I am not talking about the demise of a sports icon. But the start of 2020 has been some sort of a shock as foodies were caught by surprise to this announcement from Jollibee.
Yes. Jollibee’s Champ burger will be phased out at the start of the year. In a statement, Jollibee Foods Corp. announced that it will stop the production of Champ but hinted at the burger’s comeback in the future.
“We wish to inform you that soon, we will be phasing out our Champ burger in all Jollibee branches. We are working on big and exciting things this year for our burgers line to delight and bring greater joy to our customers,” the company said in a statement. Ojharra Manlosa, a public information and advocacy staff member, said she was heartbroken with the news.
The Champ, which has 1/3 pound of pure beef patty with cheese, tomato, and lettuce with sesame seed buns, is one of Jollibee’s original offerings. When I was a kid, I even have a collection of Jollibee figures and that Champ is one of my favorite characters. You know, the “burger faced” character dressed in a satin robe with matching gloves and boxing attire complete with satin shorts and boxer shoes.
Our customers can enjoy the same langhap-sarap beefy goodness by trying our double patty Yumburgers—regular, cheesy and cheesy deluxe variants. These are extra filling, juicy, delicious and great value for money,” the statement read. Depending on consumer demand, Jollibee said it is willing to bring back the classics.
“Our product offerings are being reviewed regularly to meet customer demands so there’s always a chance that old Jollibee classics—including the Champ—may return in the future,” added Manlosa. This news reached Jollibee’s number one competitor, McDonald’s, and took advantage by making a witty post that literally took a “jab” to Jollibee’s Champ.
The Champ burger was one of the original food items of Jollibee. It was launched in 1984, the same year a mascot named Champ joined the Jollibee Family, according to a report from CNN Philippines.
And to add another bad news reports also said that other than the Champ burger, a rice meal called Big Burger Steak will also be removed from Jollibee’s menu.
Well, bad news for the foodies, and this can be good news for those who want to lose weight this year.
