On May 21, 2025, the International Board on Books for Young People-Philippines (IBBY-PH), in collaboration with the National Library of the Philippines and other organizations, awarded the Severino Reyes Medal to outstanding works in Filipino children’s and young adult literature.
The Severino Reyes Medal, now in its second year, is organized by IBBY-Philippines in collaboration with the National Library of the Philippines (NLP), the National Book Development Board (NBDB), and professional librarian organizations: Philippine Librarians Association Inc. (PLAI), Association of Librarians in the Public Sector (ALPS), and Philippine Association of School Librarians Inc. (PASLI). As custodians of knowledge and champions of literacy, librarians play a pivotal role in shaping young readers’ literary experiences.

The ceremony, held at the National Library in Manila, honored the following:
- Best Storybook: Nakikisilong by Eljay Castro Deldoc, illustrated by Richard Red C. Elli, published by Southern Voices Printing Press.
- Best Picture Book: Sa Iisang Batya by Christopher Rosales, illustrated by Rommel Joson, published by Brilliant Creations Publishing.
- Young Adult Literature: Oha: A Story Told in One Eternal Second by Krie R. Lopez, illustrated by Mikke Gallardo, published by Milflores Publishing.
- Special Citation: Mga Tagapagtanggol ng Lupang Ninuno by Mon Sy, illustrated by Ara Villena, published by Adarna House, recognized for its tribute to the Indigenous Peoples of the Philippines and their deep ties to the land, culture, and language.


The Severino Reyes Medal is named after the beloved playwright and storyteller Severino Reyes, creator of Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang. The award recognizes the best picture books, storybooks, and young adult books published in the Philippines, aiming to honor creative excellence in Filipino children’s and young adult literature.

Danielle Florendo: Honored Illustrator and Educator
Danielle Florendo, a Fine Arts lecturer at the University of the Philippines Baguio, was recognized in the Honor List of the Severino Reyes Medal 2025 for her outstanding contributions to children’s literature illustration. Her notable works include:
- A Whale in Prison, authored by Mary Ann A. Ordinario, published by ABC Educational Developmental Center Children’s Book, Inc.
- Mga Tagapagtanggol ng Lupang Ninuno, co-authored and illustrated by Danielle Florendo, published by Alamid Publishing House.
Beyond her accolades, Florendo’s works were showcased at the Philippine Book Festival 2025, where she was featured as one of the event’s key artists and illustrators. Her dedication to children’s literature and education continues to inspire young readers and aspiring artists alike.
