In a significant milestone for the convenience and fuel retailing industry, Jose Victor Paterno, the President and CEO of Philippine Seven Corp. (PSC), the operator of 7-Eleven in the Philippines, has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) for the term 2023 to 2024. Paterno’s appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first Asian and only the second non-US retailer to assume this prestigious role.
During his tenure, Paterno aims to revolutionize the convenience store landscape by establishing an industry-wide technology platform. This platform will enable retailers of all sizes to participate in the growing digital advertising spend from fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturers. Paterno highlights that while this is a common practice in other retail formats, the convenience store sector has faced challenges due to its fragmented industry structure.
Expressing his gratitude, Paterno stated, “I am deeply honored and humbled to take on the role. It is a tremendous privilege to represent not only PSC but also the broader convenience store industry.” He emphasized his excitement about elevating the industry to new heights through collaboration with leading retail and tech minds associated with NACS and its partners.
NACS, established in 1961, originated as a US-centric association, representing over 150,000 convenience stores. Over the years, it has expanded its influence globally, now covering a total of 350,000 stores in more than 50 countries. The association plays a pivotal role as a trusted advisor to over 1,300 retailers and 1,600 supplier members, contributing to the growth and development of the convenience retailing sector.
PSC, under Paterno’s leadership, currently oversees 3,600 7-Eleven stores in the Philippines. Notably, 54 percent of these stores operate under franchise agreements, reflecting a rapidly expanding network. Paterno takes pride in the technological advancements and market share gains achieved in the Philippines, and he is eager to leverage this experience to elevate the industry on a global scale.
Paterno’s vision for a comprehensive technology platform aligns with the evolving landscape of retail. By fostering collaboration and leveraging the expertise within NACS and its network, he aims to bridge the gap between convenience retail and digital advertising. This initiative is expected to benefit retailers globally, providing them with the tools to navigate the digital landscape and tap into the opportunities presented by FMCG manufacturers.
As the first Asian to hold the position of Chairman at NACS, Paterno’s leadership signifies a broader shift in the global convenience retailing landscape. His vision for technological integration and collaboration has the potential to reshape industry standards, setting the stage for a more connected and dynamic future for convenience stores worldwide.
