Every January 9 of the year happens the biggest procession that could last for a day in the Philippines. Filipinos from different walks of life devote this day for the feast of the Black Nazarene, or also known as the Traslacion. Every Filipino devotee look forward to this historical event because it is believed to be miraculous – devotees would have healing and miracle stories which all they credit to the black icon of Jesus Christ.
Red and yellow color the streets of Manila as devotees walk barefooted. Millions of loyal followers overcome the sea of people to touch and take a glimpse of the icon. One of the interesting practices during Traslacion is the waving of white towels as it is said to be the same as touching the heavens. The culture of touch plays a big role during this religious event – devotees have to make sure that they are able to make a contact with the Black Nazarene.
The fierce faith shown by Filipinos to the Black Nazarene has been part of the Christian tradition. No one can deny the risks and potential injuries of this annual event. The strong faith of devotees makes the Traslacion, despite its possible danger. Many come to raise their troubles and wishes, some express their undying faith and gratitude to God, and there are people who also attend for advance absolution for a year of sinning.
